Youth Activities
Leo Club
The club currently sponsors one
Leo Club located at Hayfield High School.
The Hayfield High School Leo Club has been in existence since 1991. The club's community activities include providing toys, food, and toiletries for
the Mondlock House
homeless shelter; collecting towels for local animal shelters; participating in the school's
STAR tutoring program; and collecting aluminum can pop-tabs for chemotherapy treatment. The
club also sells pizza after school to raise funds to support their activities.
International Youth Exchange
The Annual Lions' International Youth Exchange program sponsored by the
Montgomery Alabama Lions Club, brings students from other countries into the United States
for a seven week period. The youths visit various cities in Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama,
Georgia and Florida. While in the Washington DC area, they are housed by club members and
other host families. During this time they are provided a taste of "Americana"
featuring a picnic, softball and volleyball games and a tour of Washington D.C.

Bland Music Competition
The James Bland Music Competition encourages youths from area schools to
compete in the areas of Vocal and Instrumental music. The contest is held at the Club, and
Region, and District levels with the winners competing at the State Convention. Monetary scholarships are provided to the winners at all levels, culminating in a top prize of $2000 for the State winner in each category.View Pictures
Johnson Memorial Scholarship
Each year the club provides two $1000
scholarships to seniors at West Springfield High School in honor of Leonard and Eleanor
Johnson. Leonard Johnson was a distinguished member of the club and Eleanor was active in
many community activities. The scholarships are awarded based on service to the community
and academic excellence.
Boys State and Girls State
Each year the club sponsors one local boy and girl to attend Virginia
Boys State and Girls State conventions. These conventions provide an opportunity for
youth to obtain an understanding of government processes and learn how to be better
citizens.
District Activities
The club also supports district activities including:
1)
The annual Peace Poster Contest that was created to give young people the opportunity to think about world peace and express what it means to them; and 2) The Northern Virginia Lions Youth Camp which is a free camping facility available to any youth group accompanied by adult leaders and supervisors.
